Seaford Lifeguards to answer 999 calls from the coastguard

News

Seaford Lifeguards began its operational season this year being the only voluntary Lifeguard team in the United Kingdom to be made a “Declared Facility” with HM Coastguard.

Our Lifeguards, Beach Support Team, together with our equipment and facilities are available for tasking by the Coastguard, commented Pete Gwilliam, Chairman of the local charity. The recognition of the tremendous commitment, training and hard work undertaken by our team of young people in being made a Declared Facility is a very special recognition.

When on duty at weekends the team will be “on watch” with the Coastguards and available for tasking to incidents in the immediate and surrounding area of Seaford bay. Calls passed to the Coastguards via the 999 system and by marine radio messages will be passed to the Seaford Lifeguards control room, only if they fall within the agreed areas of our response, remarked Peter. Our aim is to support the existing marine emergency services, the Newhaven Lifeboat and both the volunteer Coastguard teams at Newhaven and Birling Gap.
